Seamless clinical video management: CUH leads the way with first full Epic x vCreate integration

April 2025 – Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) has become the first UK NHS Trust to fully integrate vCreate’s secure clinical video management service with Epic, its Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system. This integration marks a significant step forward in unlocking the power of video, improving the efficiency of clinical workflows and enhancing patient care.

Used in over 130 NHS services, vCreate provides a secure platform for fast and easy management of clinical videos, images and supporting data. Patients and clinicians can upload, share and store unlimited videos and images, enabling rapid, precision diagnostics and more efficient clinical decision-making.

By embedding vCreate directly within Epic, clinical teams at CUH can now seamlessly access patient videos and images with a single click, streamlining referrals, improving collaboration, and reducing administrative burden.

Healthcare technology that makes an impact

The world-renowned teaching hospital is no stranger to pioneering industry leading innovation.

In 2014, as part of its award winning eHospital digital transformation programme, CUH became the first Trust to implement Epic, the comprehensive electronic patient record (EPR) system. For the first time ever, clinicians were able to access all clinical and administrative information relating to a patient in real time, in one place, dramatically improving the quality and efficiency of managing patient care.

Spanning all major clinical areas from A&E to outpatient clinics, this ambitious project marked a huge milestone in healthcare innovation and realising the power of patient health data.

By choosing to integrate vCreate at this level, clinical teams using video and images to support diagnosis and treatment planning benefit from:

• One-click access: Clinicians can instantly view and manage clinical videos, images and data stored securely on vCreate, utilising single sign-on, directly from within Epic.
• A seamless workflow: Clinically useful videos and images, from both patient and clinician devices, can be easily and safely transferred into vCreate and onward to Epic, forming part of the medical record.
• Improved collaboration and referring: Videos and images in vCreate can be easily shared with other clinical teams across the Trust, making referrals and collaboration faster and safer.

A smarter approach to healthcare innovation

vCreate believes that the future of digital health lies in utilising specialised, interoperable solutions that seamlessly integrate with the EPR, rather than investing in large, expensive, all-in-one platforms that duplicate functionality and create more complexity.

“Large, all-encompassing platforms often attempt to replicate EPR capabilities, leading to inefficiencies and overlap,” said Ben Moore, Founder of vCreate. “Smaller, targeted micro-services excel at specific tasks, making them more cost-effective and adaptable to clinical needs. They can be deployed faster, improve user experience, and are designed to work with existing workflows, resulting in measurable cost-savings and clinical efficiencies.”

“Integrating vCreate with Epic has been a game-changer for our neurology service,” said Dr. Andy Michell, Consultant and Clinical Lead in clinical neurophysiology at CUH. “The ability to instantly access and safely share clinical videos has dramatically improved the way we manage referrals and determine the best treatment pathways for patients.”

Following CUH’s successful implementation, leading NHS Trusts including Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), King’s College Hospital (KCL), and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) are set to follow suit.
