- Study finds AI scribes can free up 32 days of GP time per year

One of the digital technologies the Government intends to deploy under its ten-year NHS plan, ambient AI scribes, can save GPs up to 32 working days per year, according to new research.
The independent study, conducted at St Wulfstan’s GP Surgery in Warwickshire, evaluated Tandem Health’s AI assistant, which includes ambient-scribe functionality.
Researchers carried out exit surveys with both patients and GPs following consultations in June 2025.
GPs reported that replacing manual note-taking with the AI scribe saved between 1.46 and 2.78 minutes per consultation, equivalent to as much as 32 working days per GP each year, time that could be used to see more patients.
97.6 per cent of GPs said the AI scribe reduced their end-of-day administrative workload, and 100 per cent felt it had improved their working practices.
The surgery also recorded a 15 per cent increase in patients who felt their GP was fully engaged during the consultation, and a 20 per cent rise in those who felt actively involved in their care, suggesting AI scribes can enhance the quality of patient experience.
A further finding showed a 19 per cent drop in GP stress related to administrative tasks, supporting the view that ambient AI scribes could help reduce burnout.
Dr Faris Al-Ramadani, GP Partner at St Wulfstan Surgery, who carried out the research, comments: “This evaluation proves what many of us in general practice have felt intuitively—when used well, AI can give us time back and make the consultation more human. Tandem enabled us to shift focus away from the screen and back onto the patient. It’s not just a tool for reducing admin, it’s a step towards more present, compassionate care.”
