Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) has partnered with healthtech firm Mizaic to implement its electronic document management system (EDMS), MediViewer. The move marks a significant step forward in the trust’s drive towards paperless working, bringing together disparate legacy digital systems and clinical data. It unlocks a full digital view of patient records and will facilitate joined-up frontline care.
With a large proportion of records currently held in paper form requiring costly offsite storage, HDFT will scan records internally, digitising approximately 140,000 paper records — around 50 million images — and consolidate data from 25 different legacy systems. Consequently, the trust will note streamlined workflows, reduced storage costs, enhanced data accessibility, and improved clinical efficiency.
In addition to the Mizaic EDMS project, HDFT has signed a nine-year contract with Nervecentre Software to implement an electronic patient record (EPR). Through Nervecentre’s MediViewer module, it will link to the Mizaic EDMS system for legacy patient records, leading to faster, more secure access to patient information for clinicians within a familiar, integrated environment.
The push goes beyond digitisation – transforming static documents into searchable, actionable insights to support faster, more informed clinical decisions. Overall, the partnership underscores the NHS’s broader goal of adopting practical digital solutions to improve patient care.
Dr Jacqueline Andrews, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust’s executive medical director and executive lead for digital, said: “We knew that to realise the full benefits of our new Nervecentre EPR, we needed an EDMS that could work hand in hand with it. Mizaic’s solution will make scanning and managing patient records much simpler, helping our clinical team access information more efficiently, and drive cost efficiencies over the long term.”
Jon Pickering, CEO at Mizaic, added: “We’re proud to be working with Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, one of our latest signings, as it takes this significant step in its digital journey. This partnership is about much more than going paperless – it’s about unlocking the value from the data contained within important patient documents, enabling clinicians to work more efficiently and make better-informed decisions at the point of care. Harrogate is laying the foundations for a truly modern, data-driven healthcare environment.”
Across the UK, Mizaic is collaborating with an extensive number of NHS trusts, providing solutions to meet the digital transformation challenges faced by healthcare teams.
