One Hatfield Hospital has launched a new Ophthalmology service, giving patients across Hertfordshire faster access to specialist eye care.
Led by Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr Mfazo Hove, the service has already performed its first cataract surgery – a milestone moment for both the hospital and the local community.
The new service will diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, floaters and flashes, refractive errors such as short- and long-sightedness, astigmatism, as well as eye infections and injuries.
The launch comes during National Eye Health Week, underlining the growing demand for eye services and the importance of early intervention.
“Eyesight is something many of us take for granted until problems arise,” said Mr Mfazo Hove, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at One Hatfield Hospital.
“Early intervention is vital in preventing avoidable sight loss, and I’m delighted to be leading this new service. Our aim is to provide patients with access to high-quality, personalised care in a modern, comfortable setting.”
To mark the launch of the service Mr Hove has given his top 7 tips to help protect the eyes, these include:
- Book regular eye tests – many eye diseases have no early symptoms.
- Eat for eye health – vitamins A, C, E, omega-3 and antioxidants all help protect vision.
- Wear UV protection – sunglasses with UV filters reduce the risk of cataracts and sun damage.
- Take screen breaks – use the 20:20:20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Quit smoking – smoking increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Stay active and healthy – exercise and managing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure protect eyesight.
- Practise good eye hygiene – avoid rubbing eyes and remove makeup or contact lenses before bed.
