Alvie Health, the digital cancer prehabilitation business founded by NHS consultant surgeon Krishna Moorthy, working as part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, has been acquired by Reframe Cancer, the leading provider of specialist cancer navigation in the UK.
The deal makes Reframe Cancer the biggest and most comprehensive cancer support business in the UK.
Alvie Health was founded five years ago by NHS consultant surgeon Krishna Moorthy, a specialist in oesophageal and gastric cancer, working as part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Since its inception in 2019, Alvie Health has provided digital prehabilitation to 13 NHS trusts across 7 Cancer Alliances.
Reframe Cancer will invest significantly in Alvie Health over the next 12 months as it expands its prehabilitation, rehabilitation and affordable digital care led offering, with the aim to increase its partnership with the NHS. It will deliver cancer prehabilitation that is risk stratified, delivered at scale, with equitable reach. Alvie Health data shows 45% of patients who accessed prehabilitation are from the most deprived communities. It is estimated that only 20% of patients currently have access to prehabilitation as part of their cancer journey. Alvie Health’s digital prehabilitation will help the NHS with their aim to deliver this universally, to all patients.
Krishna Moorthy and his full team will stay onboard, Reframe Cancer will add their own management, sales, and marketing teams. Investment and advisory group Greyfriars Investments acted as advisers to Reframe Cancer on the deal.
Cancer prehabilitation represents significant clinical value to the NHS. Digital prehabilitation is evidence-based to improve cancer outcomes while reducing overall system costs and is more cost-effective to the NHS than in-house prehabilitation. Delivering cancer prehabilitation to all patients is now a key aim for the NHS as part of the National Cancer Plan. The plan committed to delivering digital-first universal prehabilitation by 2028, which will set the new standard for cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation across the UK to help all patients prepare and recover from cancer treatment.
Mark Stephenson, CEO at Reframe Cancer commented: “We are delighted to be working with Krishna Moorthy, a leader in the field of cancer prehabilitation. We see huge potential where Alvie Health has made an impact so far. The National Cancer Plan has also fully committed to cancer prehabilitation, which has already demonstrated enormous clinical value to the NHS in terms of patient outcomes and cost savings.
Our investment and acquisition of Alvie Health means we can make a real difference for more cancer patients across the NHS and deliver digital prehabilitation at scale. We are already engaging with ten NHS trusts to help support with cancer related employee absence, so this is a natural progression and in time we will also support with screening and navigation as a cancer focused CQC registered business. Our clear outcomes data and expertise from over 12 years of working with cancer patients is unrivalled in the industry, and we are now able to offer full cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation through our acquisition of Alvie Health and our enhanced digital solutions.”
Krishna Moorthy, Founder of Alvie Health commented: “I am delighted that Reframe Cancer have committed so fully, to not just acquire Alvie Health, but to have the teams and financial investment to help me realise my dream, as an NHS surgeon, for digital prehabilitation to become a reality right across the NHS.
Working in partnership with the NHS over the last five years and underpinned by academic rigour and a growing evidence base, we’re proud of the results achieved, including an overall 17%+ improvement in patient quality of life. This is significant as cancer patients on average typically experience a 10% reduction in their quality of life during cancer treatment. The insights and investment from Reframe Cancer will take Alvie Health to the next level. This comes at an important time with the National Cancer Plan committing to digital-first delivery of prehabilitation to all patients from 2028 onwards. I look forward to rolling out our offering further and delivering digital-first cancer prehabilitation at a national scale.”
